What is Brazos Valley Fiber Arts?

Brazos Valley Fiber Arts, also known as BVFA, is a volunteer-run 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting, preserving and expanding fiber arts throughout Bryan–College Station and the surrounding Brazos Valley.

The organization originally began as Brazos Valley Fiber Fest, an annual event created to bring fiber artists, teachers, vendors, makers and the public together in celebration of fiber arts.

As the festival developed, it became increasingly apparent that the need in our community extended far beyond one annual event. Fiber artists and learners needed opportunities to gather, teach, learn, exhibit and connect throughout the year. Local artists and fiber-related businesses needed greater visibility and support, and the region needed an organization capable of developing partnerships, educational programming and shared creative resources.

Brazos Valley Fiber Arts was created as the larger year-round umbrella for that work. Brazos Valley Fiber Fest remains a foundational program of BVFA, while the expanded organization allows us to build classes, workshops, fiber circles, exhibitions, artisan opportunities, collaborative programs and, ultimately, a dedicated physical home for fiber arts in the Brazos Valley.

BVFA welcomes a broad range of traditional and contemporary fiber and textile practices, including knitting, crochet, weaving, spinning, quilting, sewing, embroidery, felting, dyeing, lace-making, basketry, surface design, textile sculpture and mixed-media fiber art.

We also recognize that fiber arts continue to evolve. New, experimental and interdisciplinary approaches are welcome.

Brazos Valley Fiber Arts grew from the foundation established by Brazos Valley Fiber Fest.

Brazos Valley Fiber Arts is now the broader year-round organization, while Brazos Valley Fiber Fest remains an annual event and foundational BVFA program.

The festival is not going away. It is becoming part of a larger effort to support fiber artists, teachers, businesses, learners and community members throughout the year.

The annual festival demonstrated that there is a strong and growing interest in fiber arts throughout the Brazos Valley.

It also made clear that our community needs more opportunities to gather, learn and connect throughout the year. BVFA was created to provide a larger organizational home for classes, fiber circles, exhibitions, artisan opportunities, public programs, collaborative events and the continuing development of Brazos Valley Fiber Fest.

Yes. Brazos Valley Fiber Arts is a volunteer-run 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

Contributions are tax-deductible to the extent permitted by law. No goods or services are provided in exchange for a contribution unless specifically stated.

Participation & Community

Who can participate in BVFA programs?

BVFA programs are open to people of different ages, backgrounds, identities, abilities and levels of experience, subject to any specific age, skill or safety requirements listed for an individual event or class.

You do not need to be an accomplished fiber artist to participate. Beginners, experienced makers and people who are simply curious about fiber arts are all welcome.

Some classes and workshops may require previous experience, but many BVFA gatherings and educational programs will be designed for beginners.

Each class or event description will clearly explain the experience level, materials and skills required.

Not necessarily.

Some gatherings are informal work sessions where participants bring their own projects. Others may include demonstrations, guided activities or supplies.

The event description will explain what to bring. People who are curious but do not yet have a project are also encouraged to attend beginner-friendly gatherings.

BVFA is developing a supporter-based community model rather than a traditional membership organization.

People will be able to participate in most public BVFA activities without becoming members. Those who want to help sustain the organization may become Founding Circle or Sustaining Supporters. 

Business supporters may receive recognition, early notices or other benefits appropriate to their level of support, but they do not purchase control over BVFA programming or governance.

No.

BVFA is committed to making community participation as accessible as possible. Sit and Stitch gatherings are free community meetups, but participants are expected to bring a project to work on, whether they are experienced or a beginner seeking guidance.

Classes, workshops and the Brazos Valley Fiber Fest do require paid registration or admission to cover instructors, materials, facilities and event expenses.

Donations are always appreciated, but they are not required to participate in community gatherings.

Classes, Workshops & Events

What kinds of classes and events will BVFA offer?

BVFA plans to offer a growing range of programs, including:

  • Beginning and advanced fiber arts classes
  • Short workshops and demonstrations
  • Informal fiber circles and community gatherings
  • Visiting artist and teacher programs
  • Exhibitions and public art events
  • Artisan markets and pop-up events
  • Fiber-related lectures and conversations
  • Brazos Valley Fiber Fest
  • Collaborative programs with local and regional organizations

Programs will be added as teachers, venues, funding and volunteer support become available.

When registration is required, the event listing will include a registration button.

Participants will complete registration and payment through BVFA’s online registration system. Your place is not guaranteed until the registration process and any required payment have been completed.

Unless an event description specifically says otherwise, advance online registration and payment will be required for paid classes and workshops.

This allows BVFA to confirm attendance, compensate teachers properly, prepare materials and avoid asking volunteers to collect or track payments at the event.

Cancellation, refund and rescheduling terms will be listed during registration.

Because instructors, supplies and facilities may be paid for in advance, refunds may not be available after a stated deadline. When permitted, BVFA may allow one transfer or rescheduling opportunity, depending on the class and available space.

Participants should review the policy carefully before completing registration.

If BVFA cancels a paid class or event, registered participants will be contacted using the email address provided during registration.

Participants will receive information about rescheduling, transferring their registration or receiving a refund, as appropriate.

BVFA is not responsible for unrelated travel, lodging or personal expenses.

BVFA is currently developing programs in Bryan–College Station and the surrounding Brazos Valley.

Locations may vary depending on the class, gathering or event. The complete address, parking information and accessibility details will be included in each event listing.

Our long-term vision includes developing a dedicated year-round physical home for fiber arts in the Brazos Valley.

Age requirements will vary by program.

Some public gatherings and festival activities may be appropriate for children and families. Other classes may be limited to adults or require a parent or guardian to remain present.

Please review the specific event description before registering a participant under age 18.

Teachers, Artists & Businesses

How can I teach a class or present a program through BVFA?

BVFA welcomes proposals from fiber artists, teachers, craftspeople, historians and others with knowledge relevant to fiber and textile arts.

Teaching and presentation opportunities will depend on program needs, scheduling, facilities, budgets and participant interest.

BVFA is committed to supporting local talent while also building relationships with teachers and artists throughout Texas and the wider fiber arts community.

Traveling instructors are welcome to submit proposals. Acceptance will depend on program fit, scheduling, funding and venue availability.

BVFA is developing an online directory to help people discover fiber artists, teachers, makers and fiber-related businesses.

Directory eligibility, listing requirements and annual participation fees will be explained on the Artist Directory page.

Vendor applications will be announced separately for Fiber Fest, artisan markets and other special events.

Each opportunity may have different requirements, fees, deadlines and selection criteria.

BVFA offers an online paid artist directory, along with exhibitions, markets and other opportunities designed to connect artists and fiber-related businesses with interested buyers, collaborators and the public.

Unless specifically stated, BVFA does not act as the seller, representative or agent for individual artists or businesses. Purchases made directly from an artist, vendor or business are transactions between the buyer and that seller.

Volunteering, Partnerships and Support

Is BVFA run by paid employees?

BVFA is currently a volunteer-run organization.

Board members, committee members and other volunteers contribute their time to build programs, manage events, maintain communications and develop the organization.

As BVFA grows, the organization may compensate teachers, contractors, artists or other professionals for specific services.

Volunteer opportunities may include event support, registration, hospitality, set-up and clean-up, communications, fundraising, exhibitions, community outreach, Fiber Fest assistance and committee service.

You do not need to be a fiber artist to volunteer.

Yes.

BVFA welcomes conversations with schools, libraries, museums, arts organizations, community groups, local businesses, fiber-related businesses, tourism organizations and other potential partners.

Partnerships may include shared programming, sponsorships, venue support, community events, educational projects or resource sharing.

Businesses, organizations and individuals may support BVFA through program sponsorships, event sponsorships, in-kind contributions and general financial support.

Sponsorship opportunities and recognition will vary depending on the program.

Donations may be made through the secure donation button on the BVFA website.

Contributions help support education, community programming, exhibitions, artist and teacher opportunities, Fiber Fest and the development of a year-round fiber arts home.

BVFA may occasionally accept appropriate in-kind donations, but we cannot guarantee that we have space or a current use for every item.

Please do not bring or leave donated materials at an event or venue without prior approval.

Accessibility, Inclusion & Community Standards

Is BVFA a political organization?

No.

Brazos Valley Fiber Arts is a nonpartisan organization dedicated to fiber arts, education, cultural preservation and community connection.

We do not endorse political candidates or political parties. However, being nonpartisan does not require BVFA to remain silent about the safety, dignity or fair treatment of the people who participate in our programs.

BVFA is committed to creating a welcoming, respectful and accessible environment for people of different races, cultures, religions, ages, abilities, economic circumstances, gender identities, sexual orientations, backgrounds and levels of experience.

Participants do not have to share the same political, religious or personal beliefs. Everyone is expected to treat others with dignity and respect.

All are welcome. Harmful behavior is not.

Harassment, discrimination, intimidation, threats, deliberate disruption and behavior that creates an unsafe environment will not be tolerated.

BVFA may ask a participant to stop harmful behavior or leave an event. Serious or repeated violations may result in removal from future BVFA programs.

Additional expectations may apply to teachers, vendors, volunteers, board members and event participants.

BVFA works to select accessible venues and provide clear information about entrances, parking, seating, restrooms and other accessibility considerations whenever possible.

Because BVFA programs may be held in different locations, accessibility can vary. Each event listing should include available information about the venue.

Participants who need a reasonable accommodation should contact BVFA before the event so we can discuss what may be possible.

Trained service animals are welcome in accordance with applicable law.

Policies concerning pets, emotional support animals or animals used as part of a program may depend on the venue and event.

Participants should contact BVFA in advance with questions.
